MOMENTS TO TREASURE NO.134 AND AN EXAMPLE OF A PUBLIC SPEECH FOR WAEC/NECO STUDENTS BY CHAIRMAN OF AMUWO ODOFIN LOCAL GOVERNMENT

AN EXAMPLE OF A PUBLIC SPEECH FOR WAEC/NECO STUDENTS

A SPEECH DELIVERED BY COMRADE AYODELE ADEWALE THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF AMUWO ODOFIN LOCAL GOVERNMENT ON THE OCCASION OF PRESENTATION OF JAMB FORMS WITH FREE ONE MONTH EXAMINATION SEMINAR TO 500 STUDENTS OF AMUWO ODOFIN AT THE COUNCIL SECRETARIAT ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4, 2009.

ALL PROTOCOL DULY OBSERVED

Nigeria, a unique country; is a land of promise bequeathed to us by our heroes. Education is the bedrock of any societal reforms. Nigeria, without sound education is a weak nation.

One cannot over emphasize the significant roles in which education plays in our day to day life.

Ignorance, they say is costlier than the most expensive education.

In the face of moral decadence within our society, necessity demands that education should be given a boost to foster development.

I will not over look the resilience of our teachers in Amuwo Odofin and Lagos State in general in modeling our today’s leaders that are entrusted into your hands by GOD.

I dissociate myself from the saying that a teachers rewards in Heaven, for me your reward is here with us and will surely come to you right here on earth not until paradise comes.

Let me first thank Mr. O. O. Odumosu, the Director of Mason College in Festac Town for his determination to offer training seminar to the JAMB students in Amuwo Odofin at a reduced cost.

When we started this administration, to some, the thinking is that it is after a year or thereabout will we embark on revolution in the area of education.

Nay! A year is too far for us in Amuwo Odofin.

In my electoral promise, I pledged thus: “Education will be given special attention, incentives given to teachers while salaries will be paid promptly. Scholarship and bursary shall be given to deserving residents and indigenes in tertiary institutions. Our administration will provide free, qualitative and functional primary school education for residents of Amuwo Odofin Local Government.”

“We shall also embark on the construction of teachers’ quarters in the riverine areas. Our administration shall establish an ICT training and business center for skill and vocational training. Our administration shall reinforce the skill acquisition center at Abule Ado to train people in vocational skills and production of materials in some of our social establishment’s i.e furniture for our primary schools, offices et al.’

Our agenda in Amuwo Odofin is a reflection of the 10- point agenda of His Excellency, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, the Executive Governor of Lagos State. Within 600 days in office, he gave education a new face in the center of excellence.

Today, in continuity of our unrelenting delivery of good governance to the good people of Amuwo Odofin Local Government, we deemed it fit to enhance performance on the part of our leaders of today, the Amuwo Odofin Youths.

Since we are a visionary government, our target is to ensure that at least every member of every family in Amuwo Odofin get educated to tertiary level. Thus, it is imperative that as a government we must assist our people in Amuwo Odofin in making this vision a reality.

The local government in partnership with a renowned Educational Institute in Festac Town, Mason College (Owners of PASS Tutorial College) is determined today to give out 500 free U.M.E (JAMB) forms to students residing in Amuwo Odofin.

Also, this administration in collaboration with Mason College has set up JAMB seminars at strategic locations such as Igbologun Community Town Hall, for students residing in the riverine areas: Zone “F” Community Center, Mile 2 for students residing in Mile 2 area; and Mason College, “S” Close, 23 Road, Festac Town for students living in Festac Town and Ado- Soba area.

The Examination seminar, the first of its kind in the history of Amuwo Odofin Local Government is to prepare the students for the most dreaded examination in Nigeria, JAMB which is slated for the 11 of April, 2009.

The examination techniques that will be imparted in the course of the seminar will surely brighten both their knowledge and skill to passing the examination.

Before the crown, comes the cross; I charge you all students to be upright in your examination, believing in the principle that whatever your mind can conceive, your hands can achieve.

Examination is your cross for now; but then the crown awaits you if you are determined and focused.

I wish to clearly state that you should shun any misguided conduct during the examination as the consequence is always bitter.

Our administration is committed to improving the lives of youths living in Amuwo Odofin as well as raising the standard of Education in the area.

In view of this, I will like to appeal to parents living in Amuwo Odofin to join hands with government in nurturing the behavioural life style of their children in the best way that will conform to developing our society for better.

Our primary objective of today’s presentation is that in a few months to come, these students must have gained admission into the University of their choices with their most preferable courses.

In conclusion, I appeal to the striking teachers to call off their strike and return to the negotiation table with government and the class rooms for the sake of the pupils.

I congratulate you and wish you all the best as you proceed to begin your seminar and later write your examination.

Thank you for listening and God bless.
